Crochet Halloween Ghost Garland

A fun, handcrafted Halloween decoration 🎃
These ghosts, crocheted with thin cord, have body, shine, and firmness. Perfect for hanging in windows, on shelves, or on doors, they combine Idealium’s natural aesthetic with a festive, modern touch.

Level

Beginner–Intermediate

Materials

  • White cord or cotton and black cord or cotton
  • 3.5 mm or 4 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle or fine-point needle
  • Scissors
  • Thin thread or cord for joining

Stitches used

  • Chain (ch)
  • Single crochet (sc)
  • Half treble crochet (htr)
  • Treble crochet (tr)
  • Double treble crochet (dtr)
  • Increase (inc): 2 stitches in the same stitch
  • Decrease (dec): crochet 2 stitches together
  • Slip stitch (sl st)

Step-by-step instructions

👻 Ghost (crochet in a spiral or flat)

  • Magic ring with 6 sc.
  • Round 1: 2 sc in each stitch → (12 sc).
  • Round 2: 1 sc, 1 inc, repeat → (18 sc).
  • Round 3: 2 sc, 1 inc, repeat → (24 sc).

(You will have a flat circle that will form the top of the ghost’s head.)

Body

  • Rounds 4–6: 1 sc in each stitch → (24 sc).
This gives the head height and a cylindrical shape.
  • Round 7: 3 sc, 1 dec, repeat → (20 sc).
  • Round 8: 2 sc, 1 dec, repeat → (15 sc).
  • Round 9: switch to hdc and crochet 15 hdc → this forms the wide, wavy base of the body.
  • Repeat the rounds as desired for the length of the body.

Lower edge (wavy)

  • On the next round, crochet [1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc—all in the same stitch—, skip 2 stitches], and repeat this sequence all the way around.
→ This creates the “waves” along the ghost’s edge.

Fasten off, cut the yarn, and hide the tail.

Face

  • Using black yarn, embroider or crochet the eyes directly onto the head:
    • Option 1 (embroidery): make two small dots or short lines.
    • Option 2 (crochet):
      • Make a magic ring with 5 sc (left eye).
      • Fasten off and repeat for the right eye.
      • Sew or glue both on with a yarn needle.
  • You can add a small smile or open mouth with a simple stitch.

Assembling the garland

  • Cut a long cord to the desired length (for example, 1.5 m for 6–8 ghosts).
  • Using the same Rubi Macramé or fine yarn, sew or knot the ghosts at the top (right above the head).
  • Leave about 10–12 cm of space between each one.
  • Finish the ends with a knot or decorative bow.

Idealium tips

  • For a warmer effect, you can alternate white ghosts with mini mustard- or camel-colored pumpkins (using the same basic circular pattern but without waves).
  • For a luminous touch, weave a string of LED lights between the ghosts.
  • You can also add a little macramé or tassels at the ends.

Finished result

An adorable, handmade, modern garland. Ideal for decorating your home for Halloween, parties, or creative corners.
