Crochet Halloween Ghost Garland

A fun and handmade decoration for Halloween 🎃
These crocheted ghosts, made with fine cord, have body, shine, and sturdiness. Perfect for hanging in windows, on shelves, or on doors, they combine Idealium's natural aesthetic with a festive and modern touch.

Level

Beginner – Intermediate

Materials

  • Cord or cotton in white and black
  • Crochet hook 3.5 mm or 4 mm
  • tapestry needle or fine-tipped needle
  • Scissors
  • Thin thread or string for joining

Points used

  • Chain (cad)
  • single crochet (sc)
  • Half point high (mpa)
  • High point (pa)
  • double treble crochet (dc)
  • Increase (aum): 2 stitches in the same stitch
  • Decrease (dec): 2 stitches knitted together
  • Slip stitch (sl)

Step-by-step instructions

👻 Ghost (knit in a spiral or flat)

  • Magic ring with 6 sc .
  • Round 1: 2 sc in each stitch → (12 sc).
  • Round 2: 1 sc, 1 inc , repeat → (18 sc).
  • Round 3: 2 sc, 1 inc , repeat → (24 sc).

(You will have a flat circle that will form the top of the ghost's head.)

Body

  • Rounds 4–6: 1 sc in each stitch → (24 sc).
This gives height and a cylindrical shape to the head.
  • Round 7: 3 sc, 1 dec , repeat → (20 sc).
  • Round 8: 2 sc, 1 dec , repeat → (15 sc).
  • Round 9: Change to mp and knit 15 mp → form the wide, wavy base of the body.
  • Repeat as many rounds as you want for the length of the body.

Lower edge (wavy)

  • On the next round, knit [1 sc, 1 dc, 1 double dc, 1 double dc, 1 dc, 1 sc — all in the same stitch —, skip 2 stitches] , and repeat this sequence all the way around.
→ This creates the “waves” of the ghost's edge.

Close with a stitch, cut the thread and hide the end.

Little face

  • Using black thread, embroider or knit the eyes directly onto the head:
    • Option 1 (embroidery): make two dots or small lines.
    • Option 2 (fabric):
      • Make a magic ring with 5 sc (left eye).
      • Close and repeat for the right.
      • Sew or glue both together with a tapestry needle.
  • You can add a small smile or open mouth with a simple stitch.

Garland assembly

  • Cut a long rope of the desired length (e.g., 1.5 m for 6–8 ghosts).
  • Using the same Rubi Macramé or fine thread, sew or knot the ghosts at the top (just above the head).
  • Leave about 10–12 cm of separation between each one.
  • Finish the ends with a decorative knot or bow.

Idealium Tips

  • If you want a warmer effect, you can alternate white ghosts with mini pumpkins in mustard or camel (using the same basic circular pattern but without waves).
  • For a luminous touch, string a garland of LED lights between the ghosts.
  • You can also add some macrame or tassels to the ends.

Bottom line

An adorable, handcrafted, and modern garland. Ideal for decorating your home for Halloween, parties, or creative spaces.
