Aurora crochet basket with lid (trapillo)
Share
Looking for a beautiful, practical, and easy project to decorate your home?
The Aurora Basket is perfect for beginners in crocheting with rag yarn. It's crocheted in a spiral, has a lid, and you can add handles if you like. Ideal for storing cosmetics, balls of yarn, small toys, or anything else you want to keep organized and stylish.
In addition, it is designed to be knitted with our Trapillo Terra , a light, uniform and soft material that provides body without excess weight. The secret of its braided texture is in the use of the centered single crochet , which creates an effect similar to a rib knit stitch, very clean and modern.
🌿 Necessary materials
- 1 spool of Trapillo Terra (approx. 250 g)
- 8mm crochet hook
- Scoreboard
- Scissors
- Wool needle
- (Optional) Button or thin string to decorate the closure
👉 You can combine two colors to create contrast.
📏 Final measurements (approximate)
- Diameter: 20 cm
- Height without lid: 14 cm
- Total height with lid: 16 cm
(You can modify the size by adding or removing turns)
Points used
- Chain (ch)
- Single crochet (sc)
- Centered single crochet (csc): Insert the needle into the center of the "V" of the stitch from the previous row (not the top). This stitch is tighter and more vertical.
- Increase (inc): 2 sc in the same stitch
- Slip stitch (slst)
- Single crochet, taking only the back loop (sc h. back)
👉 If this is your first time with the centered single crochet , knit slowly and keep the tension constant.
Step by step
🔸 Base
- Make a magic ring .
- Round 1: 6 sc inside the ring. Close with sl st. (6)
- Round 2: 1 inc in each stitch. (12)
- Round 3: 1 sc, 1 inc repeat. (18)
- Round 4: 2 sc, 1 inc repeat. (24)
- Round 5: 3 sc, 1 inc repeat. (30)
- Round 6: 4 sc, 1 inc repeat. (36)
👉 If you want a larger base, follow the increase pattern ( 5 sc, 1 inc , etc.) until the desired diameter.
🔸 Walls
- Round 7: Crochet 1 sc only in the back loop of each stitch → this forms the edge that separates the base and the wall. (36)
- Rounds 8–15 : Change to the center single crochet (csc). Crochet 1 csc in each stitch. (36)
(Increase or decrease turns depending on the height you want).
🔸 Handles (optional)
If you want integrated side handles :
- On round 13 , chain 5 and skip 5 stitches.
- On the next round, crochet 5 sc over the chains to reinforce the gap.
- Repeat on the opposite side.
🔸 Lid
- Magic ring with 6 bp.
- Round 2: 1 inc in each stitch. (12)
- Round 3: 1 sc, 1 inc repeat. (18)
- Round 4: 2 sc, 1 inc repeat. (24)
- Round 5: 3 sc, 1 inc repeat. (30)
- Round 6: 4 sc, 1 inc repeat. (36)
👉 Check that the lid fits the basket.
If it is too tight, add one more round with gentle increases ( 5 sc, 1 inc ).
- Round 7: Change to the center single crochet (csc) and crochet a round taking only the back loop to form the edge of the cap.
🔸 Final touch
- Sew on a decorative button or make a small pull out of string.
- Hide the threads with the wool needle.
- If you prefer, add a fabric lining for a more polished finish.
💗 Idealium Tips
- Trapillo Terra maintains its shape without the need to stiffen the piece. If you want more rigidity, knit slightly tighter.
- For a modern touch, play with two-tone combinations or add a faux leather label.
- You can use the same pattern without a lid to make organizing baskets of different sizes.
🌸 Final result
A sturdy, functional, and decorative basket, ideal for the bathroom, vanity, or your knitting corner.
A quick, relaxing project that's perfect for making the most of your favorite rag yarn.
