Aurora crochet basket with lid (t-shirt yarn)
Share
Looking for a beautiful, practical and easy project to decorate your home?
The Aurora Basket is perfect for getting started with T-shirt yarn crochet. It is worked in the round, has a lid, and you can add handles if you wish. Ideal for storing cosmetics, yarn balls, small toys or anything you want to keep organized in style.
It is also designed to be crocheted with our Trapillo Terra, a lightweight, even and soft material that provides structure without excess weight. The secret to its braided texture lies in using the centered single crochet, which creates an effect similar to ribbed knitting, with a clean, modern look.
🌿 Materials needed
- 1 spool of Trapillo Terra (approx. 250 g)
- 8 mm crochet hook
- Stitch marker
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
- (Optional) button or thin cord to decorate the closure
👉 You can combine two colors for contrast.
📏 Approximate finished measurements
- Diameter: 20 cm
- Height without lid: 14 cm
- Total height with lid: 16 cm
(You can adjust the size by adding or removing rounds)
Stitches used
- Chain (ch)
- Single crochet (sc)
- Centered single crochet (centered sc): insert the hook into the center of the “V” of the stitch from the previous round (not into the top). This stitch is tighter and more vertical.
- Increase (inc): 2 sc in the same stitch
- Slip stitch (sl st)
- Single crochet worked through the back loop only (back-loop sc)
👉 If this is your first time using the centered single crochet, work slowly and keep the tension consistent.
Step by step
🔸 Base
- Make a magic ring.
- Round 1: 6 sc into the ring. Close with a slip stitch. (6)
- Round 2: 1 inc in each stitch. (12)
- Round 3: 1 sc, 1 inc repeat. (18)
- Round 4: 2 sc, 1 inc repeat. (24)
- Round 5: 3 sc, 1 inc repeat. (30)
- Round 6: 4 sc, 1 inc repeat. (36)
👉 If you want a larger base, follow the increase pattern (5 sc, 1 inc, etc.) until you reach the desired diameter.
🔸 Walls
- Round 7: Crochet 1 sc through the back loop only of each stitch → this forms the edge separating the base and the wall. (36)
- Rounds 8–15: switch to centered single crochet (csc). Crochet 1 csc in each stitch. (36)
(Add or reduce rounds according to your desired height.)
🔸 Handles (optional)
If you want integrated side handles:
- On round 13, crochet 5 ch and skip 5 stitches.
- On the next round, crochet 5 sc over the chains to reinforce the opening.
- Repeat on the opposite side.
🔸 Lid
- Magic ring with 6 sc.
- Round 2: 1 inc in each stitch. (12)
- Round 3: 1 sc, 1 inc repeat. (18)
- Round 4: 2 sc, 1 inc repeat. (24)
- Round 5: 3 sc, 1 inc repeat. (30)
- Round 6: 4 sc, 1 inc repeat. (36)
👉 Check that the lid fits the basket.
If it is too tight, add one more round with gentle increases (5 sc, 1 inc).
- Round 7: switch to centered single crochet (csc) and crochet one round through the back loop only to form the lid edge.
🔸 Finishing touch
- Sew on a decorative button or make a small pull tab with cord.
- Weave in the ends with a tapestry needle.
- If you prefer, add a fabric lining for a more polished finish.
💗 Idealium tips
- Terra T-Shirt Yarn holds its shape without needing to stiffen the piece. If you want more rigidity, crochet slightly tighter.
- For a modern touch, try two-color combinations or add a faux-leather label.
- You can use the same pattern without the lid to make organizer baskets in different sizes.
🌸 Final result
A sturdy, functional, and decorative basket, ideal for the bathroom, vanity, or your crafting corner.
