Stitches used

  • Magic ring
  • Single crochet (sc)
  • Half double crochet (hdc)
  • Increase (inc): 2 stitches in the same stitch
  • Slip stitch (sl st)
  • Chain (ch)

Step-by-step pattern

1. Crown

(Work in a spiral, without joining each round)

  • Magic ring.
  • Round 1: 6 sc.
  • Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch (12).
  • Round 3: 1 sc, 1 inc repeat (18).
  • Round 4: 2 sc, 1 inc (24).
  • Round 5: 3 sc, 1 inc (30).
  • Continue increasing according to the pattern (1 more single crochet between increases per round) until reaching:
    • 17 cm in diameter (women)
    • 18.5 cm in diameter (men)

👉 If you prefer a more rounded shape, stop 0.5–1 cm earlier.

2. Body (straight section)

  • Crochet 1 round using only the back loop to mark the transition.
  • Then crochet in half double crochet (or sc if you prefer a denser texture), without increasing, until you reach:
    • 8–9 cm in height (women)
    • 9–10 cm in height (men)

👉 The half double crochet gives a modern texture, with soft lines and a touch of stretch.

3. Brim

Resume crocheting in the round and begin increasing:

  • R1: 4 sc, 1 inc repeat.
  • R2: 5 sc, 1 inc repeat.
  • R3: 6 sc, 1 inc repeat.
  • Continue according to the yarn weight until the brim measures 6–8 cm (women) or 7–9 cm (men).

👉 To reinforce the edge:

  • Crochet the last 2 rounds in sc.
  • Finish with 1 round of slip stitch (sl st) to give it structure.

4. Finishing

  • Cut the yarn, leaving about 15 cm, fasten off with slip stitch, and weave in the end with a yarn needle.
  • If you use cotton or linen, steam-block it to shape it.

Idealium tips

  • For a minimalist style: choose natural colors (ecru, sand, olive, light gray).
  • For a modern touch: crochet a contrasting-color band on the body or brim edge to create visual contrast.
  • If you use a soft fiber, insert a fishing line or thin cord into the last round of the brim to maintain its shape.
  • You can replace half double crochet with centered single crochet for a more structured braided effect.
