Crochet with a two-color effect

Here’s another idea for crocheting unique garments and creating beautiful color effects: crochet your garments with a two-color effect. You can do this by working with two balls in different but complementary shades—and it’s very easy!

We have yarn balls that already contain several colors or shades, and they look beautiful, but another lovely and effective option is to create our own two-color shade by using two solid-color balls in two tones that complement each other.

This lets us expand our color options, since there are always many more solid colors available.

How do you crochet with two colors?

To crochet with this two-color effect, all you need to do is work with both strands together, as if they were a single strand. Crochet the stitches in exactly the same way as you would with one strand.

You should maintain the same tension in both strands—in other words, don’t leave one hanging while keeping the other taut. Place both balls beside you and hold the two strands together in your left hand as if they were one. As you crochet, pull both colors evenly at the same time.

When crocheting, this creates a beautiful two-color effect that gives our projects a bright and distinctive look. 

Which stitches can you use it with?

You can use it with any stitch, of course. But it’s a technique that really stands out and looks fantastic with simple stitches. 

If you crochet your garment entirely in single or double crochet, this color effect will give it a more eye-catching touch, and you’ll easily create a very attractive piece.
