Julia Romper Pattern

With this pattern, you can knit a baby playsuit in size 3 to 6 months, a basic garment for your newborn that they are sure to enjoy, made with all the love you put into your work. Design by Mariposa Tricotosa.

MATERIALS

2 skeins of main-color (MC) yarn Rubí Sweet Merino New (1 skein, 50 g, 175 m)

1 skein of contrast-color (CC) yarn Rubí Sweet Merino New (1 skein, 50 g, 175 m)

3.5 mm circular knitting needles

40 or 60 cm cable

set of five 3.5 mm double-pointed needles

4 buttons

tapestry needle

 

 

HOW TO KNIT THE PATTERN

GAUGE

10×10 cm using 3.5 mm needles in stockinette stitch: 27 stitches and 34 rows after blocking.

ABBREVIATIONS

st: stitch

rnd: round (the same as a row when knitting flat)

p: purl stitch

k: knit stitch

m1l: increase. With the tip of the left needle, pick up the strand between the stitch just worked and the first stitch on the left needle from front to back, then knit it through the back loop.

yo: increase, yarn over.

k2tog: decrease. Knit 2 stitches together.

BOR: beginning-of-round marker

M: stitch marker

CC: contrast color

MC: main color

 

STITCHES USED

 

Stockinette stitch worked flat: knit all stitches on right-side rows; purl all stitches on wrong-side rows.

Stockinette stitch worked in the round: knit all stitches on every round.

1×1 rib worked flat: on right-side rows, knit the sequence of 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch throughout the entire row. On wrong-side rows, knit the stitches as they appear.

1×1 rib worked in the round: knit the sequence of 1 knit stitch, 1 purl stitch throughout the entire round and all rounds.

 

CONSTRUCTION

Always knit in stockinette stitch.

Knit following the chart from right to left.

Only the right-side rows of the work are shown (odd-numbered rows). Knit the wrong-side rows (even-numbered rows) in purl stitch, using the color in which the stitches appear.

Shading indicates knitting with contrast color (CC), and the white squares indicate knitting with main color (CP).

 

I recommend reading the entire pattern before you begin knitting.  

This romper is knitted in one piece, beginning at the neckline..

Work flat or back and forth unless otherwise indicated.  

 

STEP BY STEP

Using 3.5 mm circular needles and CC, cast on 58 (58) sts. Knit 4 (4) rows in 1×1 rib. Change to CP and knit 2 (2) rows in stockinette stitch.  

On the next right-side row, work increases as follows: *k2, ml1* repeat the sequence between * * until 2 sts remain before the end, then knit k1, ml1, k1. You will have 87 sts.

Knit 3 (3) rows in stockinette stitch.

On the next right-side row, knit the second increase row: *k3, ml1* repeat the sequence between * * until 3 sts remain before the end, then knit k1, ml1, k2. You will have 116 sts.

Knit 5 (5) rows in stockinette stitch.

On the next right-side row, knit the third increase row: *k4, ml1* repeat the sequence between * * until 4 sts remain before the end, then knit k2, ml1, k2. You will have 145 sts.

Knit 3 (3) rows in stockinette stitch.

We begin knitting the pattern. Without cutting the CP yarn, begin knitting with CC following the chart. From the third row of the chart onward, carry the CC and CP yarns together.

Once the pattern has been knitted, cut the CC yarn and continue knitting with CP on the right side of the work. Knit 2 (2) rows in stockinette stitch.

On the next right-side row, knit the fourth increase row: *k5, ml1* repeat the sequence between * * until 5 sts remain before the end, then knit k3, ml1, k2. You will have 174 sts.

Knit 5 (5) rows in stockinette stitch.

On the next right-side row, knit the fifth increase row: *k6, ml1* repeat the sequence between * * until 6 sts remain before the end, then knit k3, ml1, k3. You will have 203 sts.

Knit 1 (5) rows.

For size 6 months only: On the next right-side row, knit the sixth increase row: *k7, ml1* repeat the sequence between * * until 7 sts remain before the end, then knit k4, ml1, k3. You will have 232 sts. Purl the wrong-side row.

On the next right-side row, knit 27 (31) sts of the first front, place 47 (53) sts of the first sleeve on scrap yarn, cast on 5 sts, knit 55 (64) sts of the back, place 47 (53) sts of the second sleeve on scrap yarn, cast on 5 sts, and knit 27 (31) sts of the second front.

Continue knitting the body in stockinette stitch for 12 (14) cm.

On the next right-side row, at the end of the row, place M, cast on 3 (3) sts, place M, and continue knitting, joining in the round as follows: knit 58 (67) k, place M, knit 3 (2) k, place M, knit 58 (67) k.

Knit every round for 4 (5) cm.

We begin  working the crotch increases.

Round 1: slip Mi, work ml1, knit 3 (3), ml1, slip M, knit 58 (67), slip M, ml1, knit 3 (2), ml1, slip M, knit 58 (67).

Round 2: knit one complete round.

Round 3: slip Mi, work ml1, knit 5 (5), ml1, slip M, knit 58 (67), slip M, ml1, knit 5 (4), ml1, slip M, knit 58 (67).

Round 4: knit one complete round.

Round 5: slip Mi, work ml1, knit 7 (7), ml1, slip M, knit 58 (67), slip M, ml1, knit 7 (6), ml1, slip M, knit 58 (67).

Round 6: knit one complete round.

Knit 1 (3) rounds.

On the next round, remove Mi, knit 1 (1), bind off 7 (7) stitches, knit 1 (1), remove M, knit 58 (67), remove M, knit 1 (0), bind off 7 (8) stitches, knit 1 (0), remove M, knit 58 (67) and knit 1 stitch before the bound-off stitches. You will have 60 (68) stitches for each leg.

Distribute the 60 (68) stitches of the first leg among the 4 double-pointed needles and knit in the round, leaving the other leg on hold. Knit for 14 (16) cm.

On the next round,  work decreases as follows: *3 knit, k2tog*, 0 (3) knit, repeat the sequence between * * throughout the round. You will have 48 (55) stitches.

Change to CC and work in 1×1 ribbing for 6 rounds. On the next round, bind off all stitches in pattern.

Resume the second leg and knit it in the same way.

Resume the stitches for one of the sleeves by distributing them among the 4 double-pointed needles and picking up the 5 stitches cast on at the underarms. You will have 52 (58) stitches.

Knit in the round for 12 (14) cm.

On the next round,  work decreases as follows: 1 (1) knit, *3 knit, k2tog*, 1 (2) knit, repeating the sequence between * *. You will have 42 (47) stitches.

Change to CC and work in 1×1 ribbing for 6 rounds. On the next round, bind off all stitches in pattern.

With CC pick up the stitches along the edge of the left front, from the bottom up to the neckline, and work 3 rounds in 1×1 ribbing. On the next RS round, work 4 buttonholes (yo, k2tog) evenly spaced along the placket. Work 2 more rounds in 1×1 ribbing and bind off all stitches in pattern.

With CC, pick up the stitches along the edge of the right front and work in 1×1 ribbing for 6 rounds. Bind off all stitches in pattern.

Sew the buttons onto the right placket. Sew the crotch, weave in the ends, and block the garment.
