How to use these charts
CYC charts show body measurements, not finished-garment measurements. To obtain the pattern’s final circumference, you must add ease, which varies according to the style (fitted, classic, oversize). Take your measurements with the tape measure without pulling it tight and compare them with the chart to choose your size.

Recommended ease for women
Choose the ease according to the style and the fibre’s elasticity. Common guidelines:
| Garment type | Bust ease (cm) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fitted | 0–4 | Best with elastic fibres or drapey structures. |
| Classic/regular | 4–10 | Balance between shape and comfort; the most versatile. |
| Oversize/relaxed | 10–25+ | Control body and sleeve lengths to avoid excessive visual volume. |
| Knitted jacket/coat | 8–20 | Adjust according to the layers worn underneath and the thickness of the fabric. |
Ease is added to your body measurement. Always check the pattern’s swatch/gauge.
Fit and grading tips
- Between sizes: if your bust falls between two ranges, prioritize the desired ease. For long cardigans, also check the hip measurement.
- Lengths: adapt the garment length and sleeve length to your height; maintain the armhole width to avoid restricting the arm.
- Upper-arm circumference: if your “upper arm” is larger than the measurement in the chart, increase the sleeve width and redistribute decreases.
- Fiber elasticity: yarns with generous blocking can gain ease; cotton holds its shape with less stretch.
Frequently asked questions
Are CYC charts the final garment measurements?
No. They are body measurements. You must add the ease indicated by the pattern or based on your preferred fit.
What should I do if my bust measurement falls between two sizes?
Choose based on your target ease. For a close-fitting look, choose the smaller measurement; for a looser fit, choose the larger one. Adjust lengths if necessary.
Can I use these charts for crochet and knitting?
Yes. They are reference body measurements; the construction (crochet or knitting) and the gauge will determine the final ease.
