Crochet Everyday Cardigan Pattern and Video Tutorial
Share
The Everyday Cardigan is a versatile and lightweight jacket, perfect for any time of year. It has a simple, elegant construction with no complicated seams, knitted in a single main piece and finished with elastic edges.

This design is ideal if you're taking your first steps in crocheting garments. 💕 All you need is a little patience, some yarn, and your favorite crochet hooks.

🎥 Step-by-step video tutorial
If you prefer to follow the process visually, here's the complete video tutorial for the Everyday Crochet Cardigan . In it, I show you how to assemble the base, crochet the sides, shape the neckline, and add the sleeves and the final ribbing.
Materials
- Wool: Classic Ruby (100% acrylic, 100 g = 300 m).
- Crochet hooks: 4.0 mm (for assembly chains) and 3.0 mm (for the rest of the fabric).
- Wool needle and scissors.
- Score markers (optional).
📏 Sizes and wool consumption
| Size | Ruby Classic Balls |
|---|---|
| S | 5 balls of yarn |
| M | 5 balls of yarn |
| L | 6 balls of yarn |
| XL | 6 balls of yarn |
For a perfect result, always knit a sample before you begin.
If your tension is tighter or looser, thread consumption may vary.
Sample
- 16 stitches x 13 rounds = 10 x 10 cm , in half double crochet, with a 3 mm crochet hook.
- Adjust the tension if your sample differs: looser → wider garment; tighter → narrower garment.
- It's important to check your gauge swatch. If you knit too tightly or too loosely, you can try a larger or smaller needle size to match the swatch.
💡 Points used
- Chain (cad)
- single crochet (sc)
- Mid-high point (pm)
- Slip stitch (sl)
✨ General Construction
The cardigan is knitted vertically , starting from one side of the body.
Then the neck and back are formed, and the second symmetrical side is repeated.
Finally, the sleeves and elasticated cuff edges and U-shaped front opening are added.

Step-by-step pattern
Throughout the pattern, the stitches and rows are indicated according to size (S/M/L/XL) in that order separated by "/". For example, if it says "knit 4/6/8/10 stitches", for size S you should knit 4 stitches; for size M you should knit 6 stitches; for size L you should knit 8 stitches; for size XL you should knit 10 stitches.
Body · Side 1
- Using a 4.0 mm crochet hook, cast on 174 / 176 / 180 / 182 chains .
- Change to a 3.0 mm crochet hook and work back and forth:
- 6 sc at each end (these will form the elastic edge). The outermost stitch is worked in full; the other 5 sc are worked only through the back loop .
- Central zone: 162 / 164 / 168 / 170 midpoints (pm) .
- Repeat elastic + pm + elastic for 26 / 28 / 30 / 32 rounds .
Neck + Back
- Locate the center of the fabric : there are 87 / 88 / 90 / 91 stitches left on each side.
- From the center, knit only the back :
- Elastic + 81 / 82 / 84 / 85 pm , turn and return.
- The return trip will be the 81 / 82 / 84 / 85 pm + elastic (there is no elastic at the neck opening).
- When the round starts with pm, make 1 chain height that does not count as a stitch .
- Continue the same (pm + elastic) for a total of 14 rounds on the back.
Body · Side 2
- From the corner of the neck, add 87 / 88 / 90 / 91 chains (use the 4 mm crochet hook) to regain the initial length.
- Change to the 3 mm crochet hook and crochet the same as the first side (elastic + pm + elastic) for 26 / 28 / 30 / 32 rounds.
Side and armhole closure
- Sew the sides with slip stitch (sl st) , leaving an opening for the armhole of 30 / 32 / 34 / 36 stitches unsewn on each side.
-
57 / 56 / 56 / 55 stitches are sewn on each side.
Sleeves
- From the armhole, work back and forth the unclosed stitches that form the sleeve: 60 / 64 / 68 / 72 stitches for 44 / 44 / 46 / 46 rounds.
- You can knit the sleeve in different ways:
- Work flat, back and forth; and finish with a slip stitch.
- Joining each round with a stitch from the last to the first stitch
- Directly in a circle (without closing turns)
Elastic cuff
At the end of the last lap of the heat:
- Chain 6 .
- Knit one round of sc (with 1 ch at the beginning of height).
- On the down, join the sleeve with 3 pr and turn.
- Return with 6 sc (5 in back loops + 1 full sc).
- From the 2nd round onwards, always work in the back loop only, except for the edge stitch.
- Repeat until you have circled the entire fist and close with pr.
Inner elastic (fronts + collar)
- Work the same as for the cuff: strips of 6 sc (back loop + full edge stitch).
- Connect the body with 2 pr per descent.
- Continue until you complete the entire inverted “U” (front – neck – front).
- Close with pr.
Finish
- Lightly block the garment flat before first use to set the shape.
💖 Bottom line
A lightweight jacket with a natural drape and defined elastic edges, ideal for wearing open over t-shirts or dresses.
Its simple construction makes it a very rewarding project even if you are just starting out with crocheted garments.
