For a perfect result, always knit a sample before starting.
If your tension is tighter or looser, the thread consumption may vary.
Sample
- 16 stitches x 13 rows = 10 x 10 cm , in half double crochet, with a 3 mm crochet hook.
- Adjust the tension if your sample size differs: looser → wider garment; tighter → narrower garment.
- It's important to check your swatch. If your knitting is tighter or looser, you can try a larger or smaller needle size to adjust the swatch.
💡 Points used
- Chain (ch)
- Single crochet (sc)
- Half high point (pm)
- Slip stitch (slst)
✨ General construction
The cardigan is knitted vertically , starting on one side of the body.
Then the neck and back are formed, and the second symmetrical side is repeated.
Finally, the sleeves and elastic edges of the cuff and the U-shaped front opening are added.
Step-by-step pattern
Throughout the pattern, the stitches and rows are indicated by size (S/M/L/XL) in that order, separated by a "/". For example, if it says "knit 4/6/8/10 stitches", for size S, knit 4 stitches; for size M, knit 6 stitches; for size L, knit 8 stitches; for size XL, knit 10 stitches.
Body · Side 1
- Using a 4.0 mm crochet hook, cast on 174 / 176 / 180 / 182 chains .
- Change to a 3.0 mm hook and knit back and forth:
- 6 sc at each end (these will form the elastic edge). The outermost stitch is worked in its entirety; the other 5 sc, only in the back loop .
- Central zone: 162 / 164 / 168 / 170 average points (pm) .
- Repeat elastic + pm + elastic for 26 / 28 / 30 / 32 rounds .
Neck + Back
- Locate the center of the fabric : there are 87 / 88 / 90 / 91 stitches left on each side.
- From the center, knit only the back :
- Elastic + 81 / 82 / 84 / 85 pm , turn and return.
- The return will be the 81 / 82 / 84 / 85 pm + elastic (there is no elastic at the neck opening).
- When the row starts with pm, make 1 chain in height that does not count as a stitch .
- Continue the same (pm + elastic) for a total of 14 rows on the back.
Body · Side 2
- From the corner of the neck, add 87 / 88 / 90 / 91 chains (use the 4 mm hook) to recover the initial length.
- Change to the 3mm hook and knit the same as the first side (ribbon + pm + rib) for 26 / 28 / 30 / 32 rows.
Side and armhole closure
- Sew the sides with a slip stitch (sl) , leaving an opening for the armhole of 30 / 32 / 34 / 36 stitches unsewn on each side.
-
57 / 56 / 56 / 55 stitches are sewn on each side.
Sleeves
- From the armhole, work the unbound stitches that form the sleeve in back and forth : 60 / 64 / 68 / 72 stitches for 44 / 44 / 46 / 46 rows.
- You can knit the sleeve in different ways:
- In a flat back and forth pattern; and close at the end with a slip stitch
- Joining each round with sl st from the last to the first stitch
- Straight around (without closing turns)
Elastic cuff
At the end of the last lap of the sleeve:
- Raise 6 chains .
- Crochet a round of sc (with 1 ch in height at the beginning of the height).
- On the way down, join the sleeve with 3 sts and turn.
- Return with 6 sc (5 per back loop + 1 full).
- From the 2nd row onwards, always work in the back loop, except for the edge stitch.
- Repeat until you have surrounded the entire fist and close with a sl st.
Inner elastic (front + neck)
- Work the same as the cuff: 6 sc strips (back loop + full edge stitch).
- Join to the body with 2 sts per lowering.
- Continue until you complete the entire inverted “U” (front – neck – front).
- Closes with pr.
Finishing and tips
- Lightly block the garment flat before first use to set the shape.
- Rubi Classic yarn provides lightness and drape without losing structure, perfect for mid-season garments.
💖 Bottom line
A lightweight jacket with a natural drape and defined elastic edges, ideal for wearing open over T-shirts or dresses.
Its simple construction makes it a very rewarding project even if you are just starting out with crochet garments.
