Step-by-step pattern
1. Base
- 36 chains.
- Round 1: 1 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch to the end ( 35 sc ). Turn the work at the end and work 35 sc around the other side of the chain. Total: 70 sc around. Close with a sl st.
- Rounds 2-3: 1 sc in each stitch (70 sc). These two rounds give body to the background.
- If you want a thicker background, add 1 extra round of sc.
2. Networked Body
- Round 4: 1 dc, 1 ch, skip 1 st → repeat around. Close with a sl st in the 1st dc.
- V5 onwards: 1 dc over each dc, 1 ch over each ch (maintain the openwork).
- Knit until it reaches 30–32 cm in height from the base (≈ 16–18 rounds of stitch with Worsted/5 mm).
Maintain even tension. If the fabric opens up too much, alternate a few rounds of single crochet (every 6-7 rounds) to stabilize it.
3. Top edge
- Reinforcement round: 1 sc in each stitch and in each ch space (≈ 70 sc).
- 2 more rounds of single crochet without increases for a stable edge.
4. Medium shoulder straps
- Mark the loops for the handles: divide the outline into front (35 sc) and back (35 sc) . In the center of each side, separate and mark 16 sc that will be skipped under each handle.
- First handle: From the left marker at the front, chain 56–60 (depending on the desired drop), skip the 16 marked sc and join with a sl st to the next stitch to the second marker.
- Second handle: repeat the same process on the back, using the same chain length .
- Handle reinforcement round: 1 sc around the entire outline , working 1 sc in each chain of the handle .
- Final round: another round of single crochet to thicken the handles and stabilize the edge. Close with a slip stitch, cut and weave in ends.
For maximum strength, you can pass a thin cord (2–3 mm) through the inside of each handle during the last round of single crochet .
Finished and locked
If you're using cotton, lightly steam the bag with a remote iron to set the shape without flattening the lace. You can add a small button or drawstring if you want to close the top, although the classic style is left open.
Care Guide
- Hand wash or machine wash on delicate cycle (max. 30°C).
- Do not tumble dry. Dry flat or hang to dry.
- Store it folded or hung up to maintain its shape.
