Grannie (or granny) means “little grandmother” in English. In crochet, grannies, or granny squares, are well known as patterns made with different motifs or designs, relatively small in size, generally square (although they can also be found in other geometric shapes such as circles and hexagons) and in any size.
This type of pattern is called a granny because these are “grandma’s little squares.” For example, it is very common to see blankets made from these little squares crocheted by our grandmothers. Although they are still widely used today and offer countless possible combinations.
