How to choose the right ball of yarn for your project
Share
Choosing the perfect ball of yarn determines the texture, drape, warmth, and durability of your knitting. In this guide, we'll help you decide confidently—and buy online without hesitation—based on your project, skill level, and the season.
1. Define the type of project
Knitting a winter scarf isn't the same as knitting a summer top. Ask yourself: What are you knitting? Do you want it warm or light? With body or a soft drape?
- Sweaters, hats, scarves : wool or acrylic blends.
- Tops, amigurumis, summer children's clothing : cotton and natural fibers.
- Bags, baskets, decoration : rag or macramé rope for structure.
2. Quick guide to fibers
| Fiber type | Characteristics | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|
| Wool | Warm, stretchy, and breathable. Great recovery. | Sweaters, scarves, hats. |
| Acrylic | Soft, easy to wash, itch-free. Very practical. | Daily use and starter projects. |
| Cotton | Fresh, resistant, defined. It's not hot. | Tops, amigurumis, baby. |
| Cotton-wool blends | Balance between lightness and warmth. | In between seasons, versatile garments. |
| Trapillo | Firm, thick, regular and light. | Baskets, bags, rugs. |
| Mohair / Alpaca | Light, very warm, soft halo. | Delicate shawls and capes. |
3. Thread thickness and needles
The thickness determines the stitch size and knitting time. The thicker the thickness, the faster you go, with a more rustic finish.
| Thickness | Guide needle | Typical projects |
|---|---|---|
| Lace / Fingering | 2 – 3.5 mm | Shawls, light tops |
| Sport / DK | 3.5 – 4.5 mm | Mid-season clothing |
| Worsted / Aran | 4.5 – 6 mm | Sweaters, scarves |
| Bulky / Super Bulky | 7 – 12 mm | Blankets, deco XL |
4. Color and finish
- Neutrals and light colors : enhance texture; perfect if you're just starting out.
- Gradients and shades : visual effect without changing the thread (e.g. soft gradients ).
- Intense : personality and energy.
5. Yield and sample: calculate how many balls
On each product page, you'll see the yardage/weight , the 10x10 scale , and, where applicable, the estimated yield (stitches per ball). This allows you to estimate the number of balls you'll need.
- Identify the pattern swatch (stitches and rows/10×10).
- Check the ball length and performance (if indicated).
- Calculate by size and add +1 safety ball if you are between sizes or knit more loosely.

6. Care and maintenance
The longevity of the garment depends on washing and drying:
- Wool and delicate blends : hand wash cold, dry flat.
- Acrylic and synthetics : easier to care for, usually allow gentle washing.
- Cotton : durable; avoid twisting, dry flat to prevent sagging.
At Idealium, each sheet includes its Care Guide to keep your garment in perfect condition.

FAQ for buying online without doubts
How do I know if it's itchy? The product information sheet indicates softness and recommended use (baby, neck, skin-to-skin contact). If you have sensitive skin, choose soft merino wool, silky-touch acrylic blends, or cotton.
Are the colors accurate? We take great care with the photography, but screens vary. If you're unsure between two shades, write to us and we'll send you a comparison photo in natural light.
How many balls should I buy? Use the swatch/meter guide and add an extra ball if your size is loose, you knit loosely, or you're lengthening the sleeves/body.
What about the dye batch? Buy everything at once. If you run out, we'll try to get the same batch ; we'll advise you on the transition if we don't have one.
What if I don't get it right? Contact us via WhatsApp or email before purchasing: we'll suggest 2–3 options that match your pattern and style.
