How to block and wash your knit and crochet garments

After finishing a knitted or crocheted project, there comes a very important step to make the result look truly professional: blocking .

Blocking allows the garment to acquire the correct shape and dimensions, the stitches to settle, and the fabric to remain even. Plus, along with proper washing and aftercare , it will extend the life of your creations.

In this article, we explain how to block and wash knitted garments, both organic wool and acrylic wool , since each fiber requires specific treatment.

✨ Blocking and caring for organic wool garments

Organic or animal fibers (such as merino wool, alpaca, or organic wool) are delicate and require special care to retain their natural softness, warmth, and elasticity.

🌀 Organic wool blocking

  1. Fill a large container with cold or warm water (never hot).
  2. Add a few drops of mild detergent for wool or delicate garments.
  3. Insert the knitted garment and submerge it completely. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes .
  4. Remove it carefully and rinse it with clean water.
  5. Gently press to remove excess water (never wring!).
  6. Place it on a clean towel , roll it up, and press to remove more moisture.
  7. Lay the garment out on a flat surface, shaping it with your hands , and let it air dry, away from direct sunlight.

🌀 Washing and maintaining organic wool

  • Always wash by hand with cold or warm water.
  • Use specific detergent for delicate garments.
  • Do not rub or twist the garment.
  • To dry, gently press with a towel and lay flat.
  • Always store it folded in a dry place , never hanging on hangers (the weight can deform it).

✨ Blocking and caring for acrylic wool garments

Acrylic wool is a very durable and easy-care synthetic fiber, ideal for everyday wear. However, it also requires good blocking to ensure the project stays put.

🌀 Acrylic wool blocking

You have two options:

Option A: Immerse the garment

  1. Fill a container with warm water (no detergent).
  2. Leave the garment in the water for about 5 minutes .
  3. Carefully remove it and press gently to remove excess water.

Option B: Dampen the garment

  1. Spray the garment with a water spray until it is slightly damp.
  2. Spread it out on a flat surface.

In both cases, adjust the shape with your hands and let it air dry in a ventilated area.

🌀Washing and maintaining acrylic wool

  • It can be machine washed at a maximum of 30ºC (unless the ball label indicates otherwise).
  • Use detergent for delicate garments and avoid fabric softener.
  • Do not use a dryer : always dry the garment flat to prevent it from becoming deformed.

🌿 Conclusion

Whether you're working with natural or acrylic fibers, blocking and aftercare are essential to ensuring your knitwear maintains its shape, texture, and beauty for longer.

  • Organic wool → delicate care, always hand wash.
  • Acrylic wool → more durable, suitable for washing machines, but not for dryers.

Remember that each fiber has its own unique needs. Spending a little time caring for your knitwear will make a difference in the finish and durability.
