If you want your T-shirt yarn bag to keep its shape, not sag under weight, and have a more “professional” finish, there is one trick that makes all the difference: integrating a rigid base.

In this guide, I explain the neatest and most durable ways to do it, whether your bag is crocheted in the round or crocheted in pieces. You will also see which type of base to choose, how to line it (so it does not wear out), and how to integrate it discreetly.

Why use a rigid base

A rigid base offers 4 clear benefits:

  • Prevents the bottom from sagging when you add weight.
  • Helps maintain the shape (especially in basket-style or shopper bags).
  • Improves the finish: the bag looks straighter and more “store-bought”.
  • Protects the fabric from rubbing against whatever you carry inside.

Types of rigid bases (and which one to choose)

Without getting into brands, these are the most common options:

  • Rigid plastic plate (lightweight and practical): ideal for everyday bags.
  • Thin “board-style” base (very firm): perfect if you want maximum structure.
  • Pre-prepared rigid base with holes/perimeter: useful if you want to attach it to the fabric.

Practical recommendation: for T-shirt yarn, a lightweight rigid base is usually sufficient if you “encapsulate” it with a lining. If you want a very firm basket effect, step it up with a more rigid base + lining.

How to take accurate measurements

This step is essential so the base fits properly without deforming the bag:

  1. Measure the inside of the bottom (not the outside).
  2. Subtract a small allowance so it fits without forcing it: between 0.5 and 1 cm in total (depending on how firm your fabric is).
  3. If your bag is oval, measure the inside length and width, and slightly round the corners.

Option A: loose rigid base (removable)

It is the easiest method. The base rests inside without being sewn.

How to do it

  1. Cut the base to fit the inside.
  2. Round the corners (so they do not leave marks or wear the fabric).
  3. Optional: cover the base with fabric (like a simple cover) to protect the inside.
  4. Insert the base at the end.

Ideal if: you want to be able to remove it to wash or change the bag.

Option B: rigid base “encapsulated” with a lining

This option gives the best finish. The base is protected, does not rub, and feels premium.

How to do it (neat method)

  1. Cut the rigid base to size.
  2. Cut two pieces of fabric in the same shape, leaving a seam allowance.
  3. Join both fabrics as if making a “cover” (right sides together), leaving an opening to insert the base.
  4. Turn it inside out, insert the base and close the opening with an invisible stitch.
  5. Insert the fabric + base “sandwich” inside the bag.

Extra tip: if the bag will carry weight, this option prevents the base from moving and greatly extends the life of the T-shirt yarn.

Option C: sewn or attached base to the fabric (integrated)

Solution : enveloppez-la de tissu ou maintenez-la avec la doublure.
