Tapiz de pared boho de macramé en cuerda natural colgado sobre varilla de madera

Macrame boho wall tapestry

A relaxing and decorative project to kick-start your boho corner. It combines basic knots, texture, and fringe for a beautiful natural finish.

Materials

  • Cotton rope (braided or twisted) 4 mm : ≈ 42–46 m .
  • Decorative wooden rod or natural stick measuring 30 cm (Ø 1–2 cm).
  • Scissors, tape measure and fringe comb/brush .
  • Support or hook for hanging work.

Measurements and cuts

Final size approx.: 30 cm wide × 55–60 cm high (incl. fringes).
For the image shown use this cut:

Element Amount Length per rope Use
Main strings 12 strips 2.40–2.60 m Assembly, top band, braids and fringes
Diagonal reinforcements (optional) 2 strips 1.80–2.00 m To mark the “V” loosely

Note: Adjust ±10% according to your tension. With cord ≥5mm, reduce length by 10–15%.

Knots you are going to use

  • Lark's head knot (rod mount).
  • Flat knot (top band).
  • Simple 3-strand braid (central motif).
  • Scallop/diagonal (“V” lines).

Step-by-step pattern (exact to the image)

  1. Assembly (lark knot): Fold each of the 12 strips in half and attach them to the 30 cm rod with a lark's head knot . You will have 24 aligned strands .
  2. Textured top band (8–10 cm):
    • Divide into 6 groups of 4 strands .
    • Knit a first row of flat knots in groups 1, 3 and 5.
    • Shift half a group and knit a second row of flat knots in groups 2, 4 and 6 (alternating effect).
    • Repeat the alternation until reaching 8–10 cm of total height (compact texture as in the photo).
  3. Separate areas and leave a drop (2–3 cm): Under the band, leave a margin without knots so that the body can breathe.
  4. Three central braids (10–12 cm):
    • Center the work and reserve 3 contiguous blocks of 4 strands for each braid (left, center, right).
    • In each block, form a simple 3-strand braid ; use the 4th strand as a guide/fixture to keep the braid straight.
    • Visible length of each braid: 10–12 cm . Secure its base with a flat half knot or a simple twist to prevent it from unraveling.
  5. “V” diagonals (scallop):
    • From the left side, take a guide strand and make diagonal scallops toward the center. Repeat symmetrically from the right side .
    • The diagonals should meet just below the end of the braids , forming a clean “V”, as shown in the picture.
    • Tip: If you are short on length on any strand, use one of the optional reinforcement strips as a guide for the diagonal.
  6. Vertex and transition to fringes:
    • At the meeting point of the diagonals, tie a simple flat knot to secure the vertex.
    • Comb the remaining strands down to prepare the long bangs .
  7. Long hairstyles (20–25 cm):
    • Brush or comb the bottom strands.
    • Cut it into an inverted, centered “V” shape (longer in the center, shorter on the sides), just like in the photo.

Finishing and care

  • To set the shape, apply steam from a distance or lightly spray with water and let dry flat.
  • Trim tips if necessary to perfect the “V”.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and continuous moisture to preserve color and twist.

Variations (keeping the look)

  • More pronounced top band: Add an extra row of alternating flat knots before the braids.
  • Subtle color: make the braids in a sandy tone and the rest in ecru.
  • Decorative natural stick: replace the rod with a 30 cm straight branch for a more boho look.
